Character Trait of the Month: Perseverance

By Coach Wendell Dunn

In the world of athletics, we often celebrate the podium moments, but the true essence of an athlete is forged in the "grit" of the comeback. Every athlete, regardless of their level, will eventually face the universal setback of performance stagnation or minor injuries. Those frustrating stretches where despite maximum effort, progress seems to stall or a nagging strain keeps you from competing. It is in these quiet, difficult moments that character is built.

A powerful example of this is currently defined by the invincible spirit of 41-year-old Lindsey Vonn on the world stage. After defying the odds to return to competition following a six-year retirement and a partial knee replacement, Vonn chose to stand in the starting gate of the 2026 Olympic downhill just one week after completely rupturing her ACL. Her decision to race was not about ignoring the physical reality of a major injury, but about honoring a relentless internal drive to "compete". Though a heartbreaking crash during the final on February 8, 2026, resulted in a tibia fracture and the end of her Olympic dream. Vonn emerged with "no regrets," viewing the simple act of standing in the starting gate with a chance to win as a victory in itself. Her journey underscores that true resilience isn't found in a perfect finish, but in the courage to attempt the impossible and to refuse to let the fear of falling outweigh the beauty of trying.

This "never-give-up" attitude is not just for gold medalists; it is a vital life skill for our youth. Research shows that children who play sports develop higher levels of grit, a combination of passion and perseverance that helps them overcome challenges as adults in their careers and personal lives. By teaching young athletes to view a missed goal or a minor injury not as a roadblock, but as a "detour" on the path to success, we are preparing them for the inevitable hardships of life.

At Goal 13, we believe character work must start early. When we invest in a child's ability to persevere through a tough game today, we are building a leader who will have the resilience to navigate the tough times of tomorrow. Thank you for supporting our mission to develop not just great athletes, but exceptional human beings.
