Coach Dunn’s Corner: Community & Coming Together

By Coach Wendell Dunn

One of the most important things we can teach young people through athletics and mentorship is the value of community. No athlete, student, coach, or leader succeeds alone. Behind every successful individual is a group of people who encouraged them, challenged them and helped them grow along the way. At Goal 13, we believe community is about more than simply being connected, it’s about coming together with a willingness to support something bigger than ourselves. When young people experience genuine community, they begin to understand that they are never meant to walk through life alone.

Athletics provides one of the greatest examples of what a community can look like when people truly buy into one another. Teams are strongest when players trust each other, sacrifice, and work toward a shared goal. The best locker rooms are not always the most talented ones, they are often the most connected. That same principle applies in life. Families, organizations, and communities thrive when people are willing to show up for one another, celebrate each other’s successes, and help carry burdens during difficult times.

A great example of someone who understands the power of community is Stephon Curry. Alongside his wife, Ayesha Curry, Steph co-founded Eat. Learn. Play., an initiative dedicated to supporting children and families in Oakland. They have invested more than $75 million into the community to provide meals, literacy programs, and safe places for children to play and grow. What makes this so powerful is that it reflects an understanding that success is not just about personal achievements, but about using your platform to serve and uplift others. Steph’s example reminds us that true leadership extends beyond the court and into the lives of the people around us.

As we continue the mission of Goal 13, we are incredibly thankful for the community that surrounds and supports our student-athletes. To our parents, donors, mentors, and supporters, your investment goes far beyond athletics—you are helping create an environment where young people feel encouraged, valued, and connected. Every conversation, every act of support, and every opportunity provided helps strengthen the culture we are building together. Our hope is that every student-athlete involved with Goal 13 learns not only how to compete, but also how to contribute positively to the people and communities around them. The question we continue to ask is this: How can we continue coming together to make a lasting impact on the lives of others?
