Volunteer Spotlight: Skyler Curran

By Caitlin Enright

This June, Goal 13 is highlighting the people whose consistency and commitment quietly sustain the mission year-round. Through our "Summer of Impact" theme, we're recognizing the volunteers, planners, and supporters who continue to show up behind the scenes not for recognition, but because they believe in the purpose behind the work. One of those people is Skyler Curran.

Skyler's connection to Goal 13 began long before the organization itself. She met Holden during her freshman year at High Point University, where she played basketball while Holden was part of the soccer program. The two became part of the same close-knit friend group, building friendships and memories that continued far beyond college. Through those relationships—including her connection with Brie and the Trent family—Goal 13 became more than an organization to support. It became a way to stay connected to Holden's legacy and the community that surrounded him.

When Skyler reflects on Holden, what stands out most is his character. She describes him as genuine, funny, and deeply selfless, especially with his closest friends. He had a way of making people feel comfortable and valued, while consistently putting others before himself. Those qualities continue to shape how she remembers him and why staying involved with Goal 13 remains so meaningful.

That connection is what motivates her continued involvement today. Whether helping with the golf tournament, supporting planning efforts, or staying connected with friends and family involved in the organization, Skyler sees every role as part of something bigger. For her, commitment means showing up consistently over time—not just for events, but in the behind-the-scenes work that keeps everything moving forward.

Much of Goal 13's impact happens quietly in the background through planning, communication, and year-round coordination. Skyler understands how important those efforts are because they form the foundation for every event and initiative. Even small contributions matter when they are made with consistency and purpose. For her, continuing to help in any way she can is one of the most meaningful ways to honor Holden and support the mission he inspired.

One of Skyler's favorite parts of being involved has been serving on the golf tournament committee. As one of the younger volunteers, she's had the opportunity to work alongside people from different generations who are all united by the same mission. Her love for golf and the community around it made the role a natural fit, but what stands out most is how the event brings people together year after year.

For Skyler, that sense of connection is what makes Goal 13 unique. It is deeply personal, built on authentic relationships and a shared commitment to keeping Holden's legacy alive. The events don't just support a cause—they help maintain friendships and create purpose around a community that continues to grow.

Being part of Goal 13 has reinforced for Skyler the importance of consistency, teamwork, and showing up for something bigger than yourself. She's learned that sustaining a mission over time requires steady effort from many different people, often in ways that aren't visible. But those behind-the-scenes contributions are what ultimately allow the impact to continue.

For anyone considering getting involved, Skyler's perspective is simple—every role matters. Whether large or small, consistent involvement adds up to something meaningful when it's rooted in purpose.

Skyler's story reflects what Goal 13 stands for—consistency, connection, and the power of showing up over time. Through her continued involvement, she remains one of the people quietly helping carry Holden's legacy forward and strengthening the community built around it.
