Character Trait of the Month: Loyalty

Goal 13 Mentors (L-R): Jeff Caldwell, Nick Phipps, Steven James, Josh Baker and Wendell Dunn

By Coach Wendell Dunn

Loyalty is one of the foundational traits we strive to develop in every young person connected to sports. It goes beyond simply showing up-it’s about commitment to people and principles even when circumstances become difficult. For a student-athlete, loyalty means standing by their teammates, trusting their coaches, and remaining dedicated to the process even when results aren’t immediate. For parents and supporters, loyalty shows up in the consistent encouragement, accountability, and belief you pour into these young people day after day. This kind of steady presence is what creates environments where growth can truly take place.

In today’s world, where opportunities to move on or shift directions come quickly, loyalty has become even more valuable. It requires patience and a willingness to invest in something bigger than yourself. When an athlete learns loyalty, they begin to understand that success is not just about individual recognition, but about collective responsibility. They start to see that their role—no matter how big or small—matters to the whole. That lesson carries far beyond the playing field and into the classroom and communities.

A powerful example of loyalty in action is Tim Duncan, who built a Hall of Fame career by staying committed to one organization and one culture. He modeled what it looks like to prioritize team success over personal spotlight, and to remain grounded through both victory and adversity. His leadership wasn’t loud, but it was consistent, and that consistency earned the trust of everyone around him. That’s the kind of loyalty we want athletes to embody - daily commitment, and an unwavering sense of responsibility. It’s not about being perfect, but about being dependable.

As we continue to build through Goal 13, loyalty becomes the glue that holds everything together. It strengthens relationships between athletes, families, and mentors, and it reinforces the culture we are intentionally creating. When young people know they are supported by a loyal community, they are more willing to take risks, grow, and lead. To our families and supporters, your loyalty to this mission does not go unnoticed and plays a critical role in every success story we see. The question we continue to ask is simple but powerful: How are we showing up for one another, consistently and faithfully?
